The Sahara Trek Mhamid is a unique 4-day, 3-night journey into the heart of the Moroccan desert. This trek blends an authentic camel caravan experience with desert walking across golden dunes, hammada (rocky desert), and lush oases. Starting from the village of M’hamid, travelers follow ancient caravan routes before reaching the majestic Chegaga dunes, Morocco’s wildest and highest sand dunes. The Sahara Trek Mhamid is perfect for adventurers seeking both cultural encounters and breathtaking landscapes.
Tour Overview
Your journey begins in the desert town of M’hamid, known as the gateway to the Sahara. From here, you will meet your camel caravan and guides. The trek passes through varied desert landscapes: vast plains, small dunes, tamarisk trees, and hidden palm groves. Nights are spent under the stars or in traditional tents, where meals are freshly prepared around the campfire.
Over the following days, the caravan advances deeper into the desert. You will cross hammada plateaus, discover ancient caravan routes, and enjoy the peaceful rhythm of life in the Sahara. The highlight of the trek is reaching the Chegaga dunes, stretching 40 kilometers and rising to 300 meters high. Climbing the dunes at sunset offers breathtaking views across the endless sea of sand.
Why Choose This Trek?
Unlike short camel rides, this extended trek offers a complete immersion in nomadic traditions. In addition, travelers can learn about desert survival, taste bread baked in the sand, and share evenings with local guides around the fire. Moreover, this experience is not only a physical adventure but also a cultural journey that connects you with the spirit of the Sahara.
